My Legendary Collection has been my collecting goal for quite a while now, probably around 2 years or so as of the time of writing this (01.26) and I'm about half way done. (My completion percentage is currently at 57.32%). This is a collection of all possible commanders, including those that are currently banned, silver bordered and convention exclusive, so it is really more of a Commander Collection than a legendary one, but still.

My intention with this collection has been to allow me to flick through and choose a commander in the moment to build around, rather than netdeck the best commander for a specific type or theme, as well as having a nice collection in folders to look through.

This is all tracked on a google docs spreadsheet because I love a good spreadsheet. I have recently (01.15.26) updated it to include price tracking over time and amount collected over time on charts, this still needs a little work though. (The price seems to fluctuate a lot as the update does not seem to get all of the figures 100% of the time.)

Please feel free to copy and re-purpose this spreadsheet if you would like to, I doubt anyone needs it though, but perhaps its useful to someone.

The state of Legendaries

So this is just a little comment on the current state of printing legendary creatures, bearing in mind this is just after the Lorwyn Eclipsed set has been released, and we are in spoiler season for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (just after all of the rare/mythics of the set were leaked in the ECL pre-release packs).

The amount of legendary creatures being printed, specifically in the universes beyond sets are ridiculous.

The Spiderman set had 79 cards that are valid commanders out of the main sets 193 cards. That is just under 41% of the cards in the set, being a valid commander. (Legendary creature, or vehicle.)

The Last Airbender fared a little better at 65 cards out of the main sets 286 cards, but if you include the jumpstarts in this release, there is an additional 47 cards exclusive to the jumpstart packs.

Final Fantasy is I think the worst culprit of this. It had 92 cards out of the main sets 312 cards be valid commanders. Being just below 30%, the amount in the set is higher than spiderman, but the percentage is significantly lower, however we need to look at commander exclusive cards as well. From the commander decks, there is an additional 66 cards that are valid commanders out of the 100 mechanicaly unique cards. A clean 66% of cards in the final fantasy commander decks are capable of helming a commander deck.

I am a big advocate for in-universe cards and whilst I might seem to be bashing on the sets above, I don't have anything against them (except possibly spiderman) as they are all still worlds that don't deviate too far from high-fantasy. And even to this point, the EOE set whilst sci-fi was mechanically really cool and still felt like magic.

The comments on the sets above are miniscule compared to my thoughts on secret lairs containing mechanically unique cards. Which I will put in here when I find the time, I don't like it.
